The ‘Sex and the City’ scene in which Kristin Davis “didn’t want to” go topless. Shooting the sequence in the first episode of season five was “mortifying” for the 60-year-old actress, who portrayed Charlotte York in the hit HBO romantic comedy series. She said that showrunner Michael Patrick King forced her to do it.Kristin Davis
On her ‘Are You a Charlotte?’ podcast, Kristin stated: “I was made to do it by Michael Patrick (King).”
“He insisted that everything would be alright. It will be fantastic. It is, too. We were in a restaurant, though. People were present everywhere.
“It’s okay,” the singer said, laughing at Michael’s insistence that she take off her top. She also acknowledged that she was “a lot of stress about” disrobing on camera. He is aware.
Kristin also discussed the difficulty of recording her first completely naked scene in “Sex and the City,” which was set during a season six plot point in which her character enters a mikveh bath after converting to Judaism.
“It was a very, very integral part of the storyline,” she recalled in an interview with Jenny Bicks, the show’s writer. Since it wasn’t sexual, it’s much simpler to engage in some non-sexual nudity in a spiritual context.
Davis was still uneasy, though, because she was surrounded by crew personnel during the shot.
She stated: “The director, the director of photography, and the ‘video village’ setup were smoking cigars and walking because the assistant director allowed it to happen.”
“I thought, ‘You know, I’m trying to do something here without attempting to seem like myself. Could you possibly move all those guys?’ It’s crazy back then what went on.”
“Even in a situation where you theoretically did have so much power, all that stuff was still able to happen, and you had to be the bad guy and say, ‘They can’t smoke cigars literally in my eye line. ‘”
Kristin emphasized that she was “so happy” that she recorded the mikveh sequence, calling it “gorgeous, romantic perfection” despite the production’s problems.
She laughed: “I was so stressed… (but) I should have just been running through town with my shirt off.”
